Considering converting my twin Mercruiser 140's from points over to the Pertronix ignitors. According to most info I've seen, it seems to be a simple job. Any information appreciated. Also, is there much gain without changing your wires and coils over to a more compatible type?

Good move. Be sure to get the pertronix ll. If your wires an coil are older I'd update them.

Re: Pertronix ignition conversion

The job was extremely simple. Mine took twenty minutes and that included checking the timing which did not need to be adjusted.

The guy that owned the boat before me had wired the coil backwards so I had to rectify that. But other than that it was very easy.

The best thing to me is the way it pops right off on cold start. I used to have to crank it for a few seconds. With the conversion it pops right off and runs real smooth.

I didn't change wires or coil. I am not sure I see much of a change in performance that would not have been gained by new points. But it runs really well at all RPMS so I am very pleased.

I went with the Ignitor I, so the II may give you more..

I also did the swap in about 20 minutes. I swapped the entire distributor (got rid of the Prestolite) to the Pertronics Marine Billet. I swapped the ciol to an epoxy one from POertronix. The nice thing about swapping the ciol is you can get one rated to run from full battery voltage meaning you can by pass the starter solanoid and the ballast resistor. This eliminates a coupls of common things that go wrong. This plus better ignition. Was a winning combination in my book. Less things to go wrong, less maintenance (setting dwell). I just keep the old distributor and coil in the boat just in case!!

yes it is very easy converstion,i did the same to my boat and also keep a set of points just in case the pertronics goes down[which it did once].

Re: Pertronix ignition conversion

I bought my boat with a cracked block--hunting for a block I came across a complete mercruiser 5.7. It has a petronics kit installed in the mallory distributor. the pick up module has 1 black and 1 red wire (only wires there) can someone tell me where to hook them up?

Usually they go on the positive and negative terminals on the coil. however, if you have the resister wire on the coil, it has to be attached prior to the resistor wire. I think there are wiring diags on the Pertronics site.

yes they do connect to the coil terminals and if you are still in doubt about how to hook it up call pertronics number and ask for carl he will help you out.
