I know there are allot of guys here that don't like Cats much, but I should think most humane people would be appalled by this story too.

"Police: Local man tortured, killed his mother's kitten
BY JULIE MANGANIS
STAFF WRITER The Salem News Fri Feb 22, 2013, 04:30 AM EST

BEVERLY ? Six-month-old ?Spooky,? a black and white tuxedo cat, did not go quietly or gently.

On Tuesday night, the kitten howled as it was dragged on an old dog leash through snowbanks and puddles, police say, by the son of its owner. Neighbors told police that the kitten?s rear legs ? later found to be broken ? were not moving.
When police confronted that man, Anthony Geyer, 21, the following afternoon, after the cat was found dead, his hands were covered in deep scratches.

Geyer claimed that Spooky died from ?natural causes? and that the scratches and swelling on his hands were from a recent fight.
But Beverly police aren?t buying that story and have charged Geyer with animal cruelty. Geyer is now being held without bail, pending a hearing next week to determine whether his release poses a danger to the public.
?He?s a sick, sick person,? said Geyer?s mother, Cherie Brown, who found her kitten, frozen, in the kitchen sink when she returned home Wednesday morning after a brief hospital stay.
?He tortured him bad,? she said, struggling to hold back tears.

Police found a near-hysterical Brown when they arrived at her Cabot Street apartment early Wednesday afternoon in response to a 911 call.
Neighbors helped police piece the story together.

One woman, Crystal Russell, told police that she saw Geyer dragging the kitten around outside on Tuesday evening. It was ?howling? and covered with ice, she told police. When she confronted Geyer, he told her that he had taken the kitten out to let it ?poop.? She told him that cats use litter boxes and told him to take it inside.

Another neighbor, Chris Perkins, told officers he saw Geyer dragging the soaking-wet kitten up the stairs. Perkins told Geyer to pick up the cat, whose back legs weren?t moving, and carry it inside to get it warm.

A third neighbor, Michelle McGray, told officers that Geyer had knocked on her door earlier in the morning on Wednesday, holding the dead kitten. He told her it ?wasn?t purring right.?
She called police. By the time they arrived, Geyer was gone and his mother had returned.
Police later called Geyer and asked him to go to the police station, where he denied abusing the kitten. He was arrested there shortly after noon.

Two of Geyer?s cousins, who accompanied Brown to court yesterday, said Geyer had been living in Chicago for a while before moving back a couple of months ago.
Brown, who yesterday obtained a restraining order barring her son from any contact with her for a year, said she thinks her son hurt and then killed the cat to ?get back at me.?

Earlier this month, Geyer was arrested on domestic abuse charges after an alleged assault on his mother in her apartment, where she had been allowing him to stay until he could find a place of his own.
Yesterday, she told a judge she?s terrified of her son now.
?I don?t want him anywhere near me,? Brown told Judge Sabita Singh. ?I?m very scared of him.?

William Barabino, who represented Geyer during a brief court appearance yesterday, said he has concerns about whether his client is mentally competent but did not ask for an evaluation yesterday.
Prosecutor Lynsey Legier filed motions seeking to have Geyer held without bail in the animal cruelty case and to revoke his release in the earlier domestic abuse incident. A hearing on both requests is scheduled for Feb. 28.

Geyer will remain in custody at Middleton Jail at least until then."

IMHO this very sick person is only one step away from becoming another shooter who targets innocent children or people. I don't want to imagine what that animal suffered through before succumbing, but I have. :(

Leave that guy up here with me for a day... I can promise you he would never hurt anyone or anything ever again.
And it won't cost the tax payer a red cent!

Another example of prejudging a mentally ill person as evil. Mentally sick persons are simply sick people who may do apparently evil things. They need help, not demonization.

It is terribly sad what he did to the cat, what is more sad is what the society will do to him.

I don't know JB. I quit reading a couple lines in because I knew I didn't want to. Had an idea where it was going and really wish I hadn't opened the thread.

I've known way too many people over the years who thought torturing and killing cats was good sport and a worthwhile activity. Yeah, they were probably mentally ill in some way but were never put away or even treated for it, let alone recognized as mentally ill. Some of them are pillars of the community, admired for their contributions. Still scum in my book. Anybody who abuses or tortures any animal, cat or otherwise, does not deserve to live. My guess is the referenced perp will be allowed to live so he's ahead of my judgement. Can't excuse it, won't excuse it.

The courts will do what they have to I suppose. Tragic that people do these things. What goes around will come around eventually, just such a shame it happened in the first place. Typing this with our cat sitting next to me.

I've got to disagree with you here.

A mentally ill person who doesn't harm anyone/anything should have access to help and treatment.

The mentally ill who hurt/maim/kill other people and/or animals need to be "put down" IMO.

What's sad in the story (not overlookin' the cat, mind you) is that everyone seems to know the guy is a mental train wreck, but no one said anything until the police needed blanks filled in on their forms.

There is too little information to judge. Lot of hearsay and journalistic sensationalism..

Let us hope that the guy gets a proper evaluation and true justice is done. If this was just an evil act by an evil person put him where we, and our pets, can't be further harmed.

I truly hate abuse of critters, but hate makes us do wrong things. Abuse of a boy with a sick mind might be just as bad.

a very sad story indeed.
i can't imagine why someone would want to do this to a harmless kitten. big, bad, tough guy i guess torturing and killing a kitten.
while it may be indicative of a sick person. it could be that this person just wasn't raised proper to respect all living creatures.
only one step away from becoming another shooter who targets innocent children or people.
this is what i think too.

It has always seemed strange to me that people react so badly to the plight of a animal yet the plight of a human hardly raises a eye brow. It looks like the guy beat on his own mother yet that doesnt get the blood boiling now killing a kitten is a head line thats going to get max attention.
I remember a news story of a guy walking a dog hit by a drunk driver. 10 mins of the story was about the dog and how it was recovering and they even had the vet on the news on a side note they also mentioned that the man had died but that was more to lead in to the story of how the dog will have to go live with relatives (oh and his young daughter will be going to the same relatives)

Im a animal lover so i am disgusted by what the guy has done but looking at the big picture this guy is already showing all the warning signs of where his future is heading and we can only hope that hes given help or at least kept of the streets.

I agree with much of what you said, with one exception. I don't sympathize much with the guy's mother. She wasn't helpless. She could have and should have taken action when she was beaten. She didn't, and a helpless animal paid the price instead.

I have 2 cats here. It's a sad, sick story that occurs far too often.

Re: **Pet Lovers** Saddened/Sickened/Outraged by story of abuse in local paper.

You know, I've spent about 40 minutes trying to write a proper response to this, particularly to what JB said.
There isn't any.

It's a horrible story where everybody lost, and I honestly regret posting it. It was something that was deeply troubling to me after reading it, and would have troubled me equally regardless of the type of animal abused.

Someone said that animals get more of a fair shake when it comes to media coverage. I suppose that's all at discretion of the media it's self. This was a story that was strictly in a very local paper, and never made it to broadcast news coverage. Had it been a baby, or person this brute injured/killed, I'm sure it would be well covered by the local talking heads.

My feelings on the man that did this;
If he's deemed a Sociopath/Psychopath by an MD, I feel sorry for him in that he's hasn't, and probably never will feel emotions such as compassion, sympathy, and understanding. There is no cure for this. Don't expect me to understand WHY he did it though. He has his limitations, and I do too.

If he did this for malicious purposes under the full understanding of what he was doing (getting back at his mother for the assault charges), IMHO he's even sicker than being a Sociopath/Psychopath.

That's all I've got to say.....

Sick or not, he should get the same. If it matters I have 4 cats in the room with me and the wife right now, it would probably not be good if I could get my hands on him.
