1979 Johnson Seahorse 4 h.p. Model # 4w79d
The gas petcock is leaking real bad when I turn it on. The motors gas tank is built in to the top of the motor. The petcock is no longer available, can it be rebuilt? it looks like it can be taken apart? dont want to be spilling fuel into the lake.

Thanks,
Suzuki40

Is there a packing nut around the stem? If so, carefully try to tighten it. If it's tight, then you need to replace the packing gland or oring, whichever is under the packing nut.

c/6

Hooty

The petcock doesnt leak when the gas is turned off. Just when I turn it on. Used to be able to turn it about one full turn, and it would stay right there. Now the vibration from the motor running backs it all the way out. leaks like crazy?

Suzuki40

Tighten the packing nut to the point where you can turn it open and closed, but with resistance. In addition, you might empty the tank and take out the shutoff valve, reinstalling it with Teflon tape on the threads into the tank and at the packing nut.
