Petit 6455 aluminum primer

I am repainting my starcraft (aluminum) boat. Instead of stripping the entire boat, I sanded/feathered the old scratches and roughed the rest of the surface. The Petit primer says not to use over old paint. The paint left on the boat is sound --- do I have to spot prime, or do I have to worry about problems if I get the primer on the existing paint?<br /><br />Thanks for your help<br />bill
