PFD Size Question

My son is at the top of the weight range for a youth PFD (90#). The next size that is available locally is S/M and it is too big as my son is really skinny. I found the size I think I need on Iboats but is there a weight limit for the adult small or extra small. I'm hesitant to buy online because I'm not sure which size he will need. Any thoughts?

Re: PFD Size Question

For me, it is important that my PFD fit well. I kayak and comfort and adjustability is important to me. If he's going to be wearing it all day, it needs to fit well. I really like to try them on first. If it's an extra or guest PFD I have bought on line and got some good stuff for a good price. You can catch some good deals in stores at the end of the season. Good luck.

Re: PFD Size Question

I've got a son with the same problem. There are about two years where nobody seems to have a lifejacket that fits if your child is thin and tall. Think of it as a frustrating market opportunity.
We tried lady's small but they're usually to loose on top. Some competition jackets fit but they're not approved or as safe. If you find a good one I'm sure many would like to hear.

Re: PFD Size Question

for motorboating, you want one that won't slip or rip off if he is thrown violently off the boat at high speed. Slalom skiing is a good way to test this function.
Kayaking/sailing may not require as much to be safe.

The Coast Guard thinks so, too. PFDs have to be appropriate for the wearer ... ;)

You can always go to local outlets like walmarts etc fishing, boating supply centers and trythem on. Then e-order if you must but check you may get a great price there.
