I inherited a Pharos igps CF. I don't have any manuals or information and can't seem to find answers to my questions online. I have an Ipaq 2215 that has a CF slot but when I put the gps into it it treats it like a modem instead of a GPS. I wonder if I need some other software along with this thing? Does anyone have any experience with these things....please.

Re: Pharos GPS

The GPS uses a Comm port for it's connection.

Follow this link:
Destructions

Be sure you set the comm port to a baud rate of 4800,N,8,1.

The trick to installing hardware like this is to stop Windows from 'helping' you do the install. Windows 'assumes' it's a modem (partially because it detects it needs a serial comm port and labels it as a 'modem'). Follow the text.

In case you have problems d/l'ing the text file, here it is in ascii...

How to configure the Pharos iGPS-CF on a Windows PC

General note: In order to use the Pharos iGPS-CF on a Windows PC, you have to configure an additional standard serial port (COM port). You don’t need any additional software or driver beside the navigation software, such as Route 66. There is no need to download software from the Pharos website.
The instructions below apply for Windows 9x, ME, 2000 and XP.

To install the standard serial driver, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Plug the Pharos iGPS-CF in your PC-Card to CompactFlash adapter and the adapter in a free PC-Card slot of your notebook (previously, “PC-Card” was called PCMCIA”).
2. When the "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)", then press "Next". If the Wizard does not pop up, go to the Control Panel and select “Add Hardware”.
3. From "Please choose your search and installation options" select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to Install", then press "Next".
4. From the list "Hardware Type" choose "Common hardware types" and select "Ports (COM &LPT)", then press "Next".
5. When the "Update Driver Warning" pops up, select "Yes".
6. From "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard", select "Finish".

This will create a new COM port, such as COM5. The actual number depends on how many COM port were already configured before adding this new port.

To configure the Pharos iGPS-CF in Route 66, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Route 66.
2. Select “Window” from the Toolbar, choose “GPS status”.
3. Press “Yes” to activate the location file, the 1st “GPS” Window will pop up.
4. Click on the small arrow near the top right corner and select “Edit properties”, a 2nd GPS Window will pop up.
5. Below “GPS Connection”, select the COM port that was created with the “Found New Hardware Wizard”.
6. Make sure the connection is set to 4800 Baud and press “OK”. This will close the 2nd GPS window.
7. Watch the 1st GPS window, you should now see a message indicating that the GPS is searching for satellites. Once the GPS has found enough satellites to compute the current location, you will see values for the various attributes, such as Longitude, Latitude, Altitude, Time and so forth

Re: Pharos GPS

Xcusme... Thanks so much for all the info. I am going to try to sort it all out although I am trying to use this thing on an Ipaq PDA and things seem to be a lot different on it than on my laptop as far as windows, etc.
