If your coils are under the flywheel its a 69 and older "phelon magnito" also called the "lightning" ignition.

if your coils are outside the flywheel and mounted on top the power head its a 1970 and later "phase maker" also called a " Thunderbolt " ignition.

1972 might have been the last year for the phasemaker.---If there is a black rectangular box beside the sparkplugs it is NOT a phasemakerr.------Why the question ?.

my friend just bought a merc so i was telling him of my phazemaker woes with my 7.5...still cant get her to run on two cyl..lol but i did finally find the correct orange coils so just have to install them. Anyway...his is a 20hp right around that 1972-73 range with the blue stripe on the cowl hood

According to one service manual, the Phasemaker was discontinued in 73 on the 20hp, 74 on the rest of the 2 cylinder motors except the 402, which continued until 1975. However it was used on the single cylinder until 1988.

Manual could have a Typo...

Mercury first went with Blue Striping on the cowls in 1972, and used blue through 1983
