Hellacious pheasant numbers in northwest Kansas put us back in the number one spot for birds!!!
Today (SAT), was the big opener, and my group of 8 got our 32 bird limit by 9:52am.
Many people we talked with were doing about the same, so it wasn't skill in knowing where the birds were.
It's a huge boom to the economy in the smaller western Kansas towns, so I'm glad to see numbers back up after a 3yr decline.......... :D

Kennys, congrats. My favorite thing to do. Here in Ca. we have a 2 bag limit for the first 2 days then goes to 3 after that. Our season only last 44 days on pheasant. SUUUCKS. What kind of dogs do you guys use in Kansas

Dogs vary widely....I use Labs personaly, but German shorthairs are real popular, as are Vizslas.
Our season is about 80 days long, but alot of us feel it should be shortened by 30 anyway.
I haven't seen this many birds sinse the early to mid 80's.
We hit a CRP field before sunrise today and busted about 150 birds that were on their way to feed-this was out of an 80 acre patch!!!!

I'm glad to see some one is bagging birds. At one time the state of CT stocked well. Pheasant are not to common here anymore but.....we got more wild turkey than crows we see them wandering thru the neighborhood all the time. Any the last 2 years black bear is starting to move back in from the Berkshires in Mass. A couple of weeks ago a 700 lbs moose was struck by a SUV and killed about 15 miles from here. We lost the birds but we got alot of new game moving in...Ted

Kennys, I use labs also, I got her for duck hunting but she's great on upland too. We are having a great quail season so far and Pheasant opened yesterday. Here in Ca. going out on the opener is kind of crazy. We have good duck seasons here as well. Pacific fly zone brings in alot of ducks and geese. Good luck this season and happy hunting. Jgregory I just love GSHP. One day.

Yea, the opener is crazy at times.......I got asked to leave my own ground this morning!!!!!
It's a wonder someone hasn't lowered the tube on people like this........
BTW, I won the fight on the issue of who owned the ground I was hunting on.......
Goodluck all!!! :)

For what it is worth, I took a pheasant in the grille of a Jeep Cherokee at about 70 mph on Rte. 9 south of Phillipsburg a few years back.

Now I know why a lot of those Kansas cars are missing a lot of plastic on their front ends!

Jinx

Re: Pheasants in Kansas

Those pheasants ARE hard on vehicles, but the Hardest on vehicles in Western Kansas is those Darn Tumbleweeds.....when they dry out and break free, they are just as hard as a small tree shaped like a ball.......I'm sure all know the story of dorothy and todo....well....you put a 40-50mph wind behind a tumbleweed and it'll take the RADIATOR clear OUT of your car!!!! 5 or 6 ounces of weed (not the good stuff) and 2 lbs. of stump....figure the crosswind component, and yea, it can do some damage.......... :D
