Photos of my 1975 Sea Star trihull (advice please...)

Good afternoon.

Maybe you have seen the photos, but, I have my dad's old 1975 Sea Star, 17' trihull I/O, with the common rugged ol' beast, 165hp Mercruiser inline 6. Back in 1999 (a few years before my dad passed away), he called me up and said along the lines, "hey mom and I don't use the boat anymore and don't get around as much, so if you want it, come get it".

The old girl (I named the boat "Lady J") has seen better days, but she still runs great. The flooring in the stern is a little spongy, but otherwise okay. My wife and I cut out a piece of marine plywood and made an exact fit for the stern's floor. I just figured "what the heck" and screwed it right down over the existing carpet with galvanized deck screws. We also coated the marine plywood with Thompson's waterseal a few times before mounting it in the boat.

The trailer is an old single axle heave steel trailer with wooden bunkboards. It was gray primer, then black, then white. The white is slowly peeling away, so the trailer looks horribly ugly and speckled. But it is still strong and rugged. The whole boat/trailer combo weighs in at 2100 pounds.

Please see these photos and you'll see my old boat:

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/boatyard.jpg
(scanned photo is a bit blurry - sorry)

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/SeaStarstern.jpg
(can't quite see it, but it has the original Mercruiser outdrive and 14.5 x 21 prop)

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/SeaStar-fore.jpg
(I'd like to get a radio/CD player put in under the glove box)

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/SeaStar-aft.jpg
(photo was taken with wide-angle lens - boat looks like it's 27' long. Oops....)

http://members.aol.com/ammonc/165engine.jpg
(rugged ol' beast of an engine. Small block Chevy 250ci inline 6 - gotta love it!)

I would like to slowly restore this old boat and recarpet it and get new seats. But, then there's the old addage: "When you have the money, you don't have the time - when you have the time, you don't have the money".

Thank you for any advice you can offer on keeping this old girl running in top shape!

Butch

Looks like it's in real good shape for its age. I'd investigate/repair the rotted floor ASAP and inspect stringers and transom. It's only gonna get worse until you repair it and it looks like the boat is way too nice to let it rot away. :)

That's a nice boat. I'd fix it up too if I were you.
Have the engine checked if you haven't already done so. In my short life as a I/O owner I found the engine is the most expensive thing to fix/replace.
Other than that... Good luck. :)

Thanks...

The engine is rugged and strong. Last season a buddy and I did a massive tune up on it. This year I replaced the plug wires and it fires right up!

The old Mercruiser 165 inline 6 is a legendary beast of an engine. It will most likely outlive me! The boat itself has seen better days, but, it's still a classic old freshwater lake boat and in memory of my dad, I just have to restore it and keep it running strong for many years to come.

Butch

Looks like a 1977 Magnum 17' tri-hull that I sold three years ago. Mine had a Mercury I-6 150hp outboard.

Those tri-hulls were as common as ants in the 1970's. Very stable, and good internal space, but tended to pound a lot.

Always good to see these around, kind of becoming antiques. Should be easy to fix up. Have fun.

Nice looking tri hull. I'd save money and repair the floor, stringers and recarpet as soon as you can (it really will only get wirst...quick too).

I/O's are a good power plant as long as you keep the waterpump impeller changed and the bellows in good shape (if you fail on either they can get expensive quick)

I think it is a darn fine looking boat with loots of life left in her.

That's a nice old sled, I think if it was mine i would be finding out about the stringer and transon, just fixing a portion of the floor can be masking a major problem, pull the floor and check it out its almost 30 years old the hull will stay forever but a rotted stringer or transom can deep 6 it. Just my thoughts :D
