I took my distributor apart this weekend to inspect it and ended up replacing the rotor and cap. When I looked at it the coil had some grease (or other orange substance) oozing a bit. I've never replaced a distributor before so i didn't know what I was looking at. Can anyone shed some light here? Should i replace it, it's only a $20 part. It's a 3.0.

Do you have a serial number or at least a year of this engine. Some coils are oil filled but they are not in the distributor.

The coils are either oil filled or epoxy filled. If yours is leaking get a new one... in fact.. I keep a spare in the boats tool box. Had to get towed in once from one that died on us while we were underway.... and that was enough.

Re: Pick-Up Coil

Another quick question. When I replaced the distributor I couldn't get it t seat right with the markings I made. The timing seems off as it's not idling right. Should I redo the timing or adjust the idle?

What ignition system is this? Points? Yes - the timing needs to be set every time you remove the distributor.

Check the timing, when you put it back on it may not have meshed with the cam gear exactly the same as it did when you took it off. It may be off by a tooth from where it was on the distributor gear. When you push the distributor down the distributor gear contacts the gear on the cam and the rotor will turn a little as you instal it. If the timing is off You could pull the distributor and try again, or just readjust.
