Picked up an 85 HP Rude today. Model #85993E. From What I gather it is a 1969 electric shift. Does this sound correct? I did not recieve the original controls, but I did get the wiring harness. I plan to hook up a key switch or toggles for ignition and starting, can a toggle switch be used for shifting purposes? I will need to heli-coil one spark plug hole, as it is stripped. Any info would be appreciated.

You guys up North are so lucky. In Florida, a motor of that vintage would be an absolute rust bucket crap. Your motor looks to be in pretty nice shape for its age.

I am thinking the Old Motor is a 1970's model of some kind.

My plan is to fix and sell, sell as is, or swap as is for a smaller project engine.

What's important is-what is the cranking compression on all 4 cyls. You'll probably want to immediately replace the water pump impeller before you try to start it. Also, change the gear oil in the lower unit. You can look at the factory exploded parts diagram here: epc.brp.com An original factory service manual can be obtained here: outboardbooks.com

The two port cylinders have 140 and 150 psi. And it shifts real good. Next thing to do is check for spark.

Those early crossflows ran high compression. That compression is outstanding.

Is there a classifieds section I'm missing? I need to get rid of this for a smaller unit.

Sorted out all the wires on the harness and was able to get good spark. I haven't gotten any nibbles on Craigslist yet, and this motor keeps looking better to me all the time. I need a suitable boat I think.

i have a similar motor on my 18' lapline, mine is a 1979, very reliable, jumps out on plane plenty of thrust, 30+ mph, probably faster on a lighter hull, the model number says it is a 1969
