I've finally managed to find the time to upload some pictures for my ongoing projects.
my father in law's boat (project 1)

and

my boat (project 2)

The rot in my FIL's boat was unbelievable. Baretta glassed the stringers in with chopped glass laminating only a few inches up ONE side of the stringer. That was the only 'protected' surface on the stringer! The rest of the stringer was raw, untreated/protected wood  no encapsulation, no resin coating, no nuttin! and they fastened everything together with 9 gazillion staples.

My boat is a different story. All wood components were resin coated. But my floor was developing soft spots I'm guessing due to age, use and compromising of the glass top coat. Everything was sealed pretty well, except where the screws connected the floor, which weren't sealed and allowed rot into the stringers. Something else interesting was found after pulling up the floor and then the carpet inside the ski locker. All 4 stringers were broken along a plane that cut almost right under where the driver would sit (front seats) scary stuff!! luckily (and for some strange reason) the hull shows no indication of any previous repair or damage relating to what ever caused the stringers to fracture. So, I'm thinking that I will be replacing ALL the stringers and bulkheads in my boat too (dang! I must be a sucker for punishment!! :p ) Looks like it will take a bit of work though. The stringers 3/4" ply about 10' & 12' in length, my thoughts are the manufacturer had extra long plywood sheets. I'm figuring instead of trying to source non-standard plywood sheets, I'll use 2 -3/8" thick stringers from a 4x8 sheet, stringers cut to the appropriate length, with butt joints on each length staggered, backed and fastened together, then fully encapsulated.

(it's a good thing I'm temporarily unemployed.. I would have never had the time to take on all of this otherwise ;) )

Craig I'm interested in the picture of your FIL engine out.
What motor is it? from the pics it looks like a V6 or V8.
Just trying to visualise how the mounts are constructed, are there 4 ,
Also how to remove the engine away from the coupler and how the exhaust is routed.

Just curious should i have to do this myself one day!

Well Peter, I'm not Craig W, But Maybe I can help......

On the FIL's boat, I see a V-motor Mercruiser(6 or 8, doesn't matter).....
There are 2 motor mounts bolted to the motor stringers... The Rear motor mounts attach to the inner-transom plate....
The Exhaust is seperated at the Riser/Downpipe joint......
The Coupler is Bolted to the Flywheel, It comes out With the motor......
To release the coupler from the outdrive, Pull the Outdrive FIRST ..... It's Got to be pulled Before you can reinstall the motor Anyway.....

Hi Peter, Bondo has beat me to answering you ;) and has said pretty much how things are set up. My FIL's Merc is a V6 175HP but as bondo pointed out, it's really a moot point. If there's anything else, I have more pictures (not uploaded yet) that may help you get an idea.

Hopefully you won't need to do this some day, not that it's a big deal.. however, other things to consider: needing Merc engine alignment tool to properly re-align the engine during reinstallation (that sucker cost us $230CAN!!) and the Merc manual helps too (there's a few little tricks to pulling it properly)

If the Baretta was built in Conway Arkansas it doesnt surprise me what you found inside. I was there in....1978 or 1979 with a friend to pick up his 18' bowrider. If you would like to hear my observations that Saturday morning...just let me know.

Good luck on your projects

CCrew: I'd bet on crazier :p (the main reason for both at the same time is they are both side by side in my FIL's garage..AND as we all know too well, the projects all seem to start small and GROW! I'm just finishing up the stringers in my FIL's boat and should be putting the floor down this week (fingers crossed)

Johnnybigrigger: it's a very good possibility the Baretta was built in Conway. From what we understand about the company it's been out of business for a while. I'd think the time frame of the business would be about right.. building boats late 70's thru the 80's, then have a whole heap of "life expectancy" issues with customers and go out of business. And after what I've seen with shotty workmanship on this thing I'd really be curious what you saw in the 70's ;)

Re: pics of my projects

craig,
Mel Hart was famous for his low cost entry level boats, and a local dealer sold hundreds of them from 76-81 in my area. I will have some time later today to jot down the story. It was an eye opening experience

Re: pics of my projects

Ok many thanks for the explanation of motor removal.
I see the outdrive has been removed from the, is it called outer transom plate?
Is this the point where the rubber exhaust and shift bellows connect?
I do have a Clymer manual but have not seen a "dummies" picture of all the parts together.
Everthing would be explained once the unit was apart!

$230 Canadian for an alignment tool. sounds steep
whatever that is in $USA or £sterling.
I am not beyond making one of these provided i have a pattern/dimensions.
Also i have heard that the large bellows are a nuisaince to replace without an expander.
Well thats all for now i think
What a great place to answer these ?
Trivial to some but informing to others!!!
Thanks again
Peter
