Picture of an Engine part that appears to be important

A few weeks back I had my 135 HP Evinrude 1974 at the shop. I almost always work on my own equipment, but was in a serious time crunch so I brought it into the local marina to have my motor repaired. Turns out that some seals were bad and the entire power head had to be removed. Anyway, last night I found this piece in the bottom of the Engine compartment. I'm not sure, but it appears to be an important looking piece. Does anyone know where this thing is supposed to be?

Note: I put a Penny by it for scale, and I also noticed that it has a slight taper.

It is a crankcase alignment dowel. If they had the powerhead apart to replace seals, they should have put it back in. If the powerhead did NOT come apart, then it may have simply gotten knocked out, in which case it's not going to hurt anything by not being there. If you want to put it back, you'll see a hole running through both halves of the crankcase. There are two pins, one up high on the port side, and one down low on the starboard side... You should find one missing...

Really? That was my first thought but it
is tapered and had paint on the ends which made me skeptical. Should I get that thing put back in?

Like I said, if the powerhead was never taken apart, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you want to, it won't hurt to put it in, but it won't hurt to leave it out, either... It really only comes into play when the powerhead is being assembled, as it aligns the crankcase face with the cylinder block. Once everything is installed and tight, it doesn't do much...

The power head was taken apart, that's
why I worry. Is this a piece that can fall out after reassembly?

Yes it can. If you are troubled by it ask the tech who assembled the block to check the torque on the crankcase bolts. Or just do like they do in New york. Fagedaboudit.
