Re: pictures of restoring my project boat

The boat is a 22'6 ply-glass, built in the late 70's by my uncle and dad. The fiberglass was delaminated, there were some cracks in the ribs, the lift rails and strakes had seperated from the bottom and there was termite damage. The boat had polyester resin and wood strakes....37 gallons later of epoxy resin, 6-1lb tubs of microballons, 5-1lb tubs of aerosil, and 2 sheets of 8 lbs structure foam the glass work is almost complete. Who knew that this boat would have taken so much resin...I think I spent about close to 2,000$ for resin alone. If I had to do it again I would have bought a 55 gal drum....I am thinking that the total amount spent on just the resin, glass, fillers, is close to 3,000$. So don't feel to bad when you by a gal or more of resin and spend a few hundred dollars...Good Luck...

Thats why I use polyester, its a lot cheaper than epoxy.
But you get what you pay for and you have a better boat in the end.

It looks super unique..and it goes on a trailer.!

Did they originally buy plans or just whing it?
Whats it got for powah?

Looks great- Also looks like it was a LOT of work. But, it's a good looking boat, and especailly given the family connection, well worth saving.

That epoxy cost up front will be justified down the road- It is so much better at bonding to wood. You'll be passing that boat on to further generataions for sure!

Wow, that boat looks nice. I has very nice lines. Everytime my project seems big I can now think of yours, which looks quite a bit bigger!

I will be watching closely, one day I would like to build my own.

Re: pictures of restoring my project boat

Thanks everyone, I figured that this boat should last as long as the motor does, in the meanwhile we might build something bigger as time goes on. The boat was built with no formal plans just trial and error. It is a beautiful boat but still has a lot to be desired. It is a shafted boat and has a 120hp yanmar, the entry is a modified v, the transom is the focal point on the boat, since it has multiple compound curves. I'll post more pics soon...

Awesome, that looks great. Don't feel bad. I spent $3,000 on one that needed a lot less than yours and then sold it for a huge loss because I did not like it. I think you surely have something there that is worth the effort especially when you add the sentimental aspect of it. It looks like a quality restoration you can be proud of. I did not see if you mentioned it but wonder if your dad and uncle are still here to see this. Good luck to you on the rest of the work.

yes my dad and uncle are still here. In fact my dad is helping with the re-build, and my uncle is starting another boat project. The new boat is similar in design just bigger 26 ft long 8 feet wide..

Staying white or are you going black?

Black would make that thing look badder then anything in a Bond movie.
