I'm gonna be in Pompano Beach the 2nd of Nov thru the 15th. Wanting to try fishing the pier and would appreciate any info as far as basic rigging and bait. I was thinking a 2 - 3 oz sinker on the bottom and a leader about 2-3 foot up with the hook and maybe raw shrimp. Need to keep it simple as I won't have much equipment. Gonna be rod and reel and basic tackle. Also any info on laws as far as license. I'm an Indiana resident. Thanks for any help. Might add that I will be fishing for what ever bites and probably release what I catch.

If you have a cat fishing setup I would use it. That?s what we do and it works well. I rig it the same way I rig for cats but I don?t use a slip bobber. Shrimp will work for bait alive or frozen. Iv even seen people use cut bait for shark. A salt-water license will be needed. We seam to get checked every time, I think they like to check the out of town people more. Expect to catch just about anything on shrimp.

Use a sabichi(sp) rig on a small spin cast and catch live bait as you need it. Then just hook the bait across the fin in its back and free line it if you can or sink it to the bottom. The small fish will nibble the shrimp to pieces from a pier. Live pilchards are best IMO and catching them with a sabichi rig is fun also.

If the specs are hitting, try this:

Tie your line to a 3 way swivel. Tie a one or two ounce round weight on one foot of line to the swivel, then a hook with six or eight feet of line to the third eye of the swivel. Bait with a whole shrimp. It's a pain to cast, but the sinking weight makes the shrimp move across the fish's field of view instead of straight down and they kill it. If they are hitting, you will tie one on well before your rig hits bottom.

Good luck and have fun!

Fishing rules and regs change here so fast even us fishermen can't keep up with it. Pompano Beach Pier had a fee you pay to fish which included your license. A pier will cary a license for everybody, and charge you a small fee to fish. A good setup would be a pompano or whiting rig with shrimp. You can buy them at the pier. The proper size sinker would be determined by the current and wave action. The pier can help you with that selection also. For whiting and pompano I use lightweight tackle. Enjoy your stay and take the water taxi to Lauderdale down the ICW and stop at the many watering holes. :)

Yes I done a little looking on there yesterday. I think as long as I stay on the pier and do what the people running it say I will probably be fine. I just want to catch some fish and have fun. My end of summer and most of my fall fishing and deer season in Indiana got thrown out after I injured my shoulder at work and had to have surgery so now that it is getting a little better I have some catching up to do. Thanks again everyone.

You will be fine....fire. This is a good time of the year for surf fishing. You will have many options. Temps in the 80's during the day and 70's at night. Have a great time. Capt. Mike.
