It was suggested over in another thread I had started about engine rigging, that my standard issue Yamaha prop was "not that good." So I thought I'd start another thread here and invite comments. This is the pic posted in the other thread that generated the comment.

I'm assuming the person meant versus an identically rated prop (pitch, diameter, etc) from another manufacturer.

So, can someone tell me what a better prop for this application would be...and why? Assuming all dimensions between this and the better prop are equal, would it be material that makes the difference? Blade shape? Number of blades?

Currently the boat runs at 5800 WOT @ about 40 mph, which seems not too bad for a 90 Yamaha 4 stroke on a Scout 170. I think this prop is painted steel and has a pitch of 19.

And for bonus marks...is the engine at the correct height?

That just can't be! Are there any other holes below the cavitation plate that I can't see in the photo that would be water pick-ups? You just can't have the water intakes that high on the leg.

Well, after the remark by Dhadley I believe on the other post you had, I took a second look at your prop, and thought there was a chunk out of the top blade? Just because the gray trim tab matched the color of the trailer frame in the background, (maybe he took a quick glance, and thought that also?) Aside from that, the prop looks fine to me!

Looks like the engine could EASILY come up a hole or 2 for sure.
