Is it possible to push the hub out of the prop using a big vise and the appropiate set up jigs, big socket and piece of pipe.
I believe the hub has slipped and just wanted to see what exactly has failed, I don't want to ruin anything.

Well how do you think the prop shops do it? My guess.......the same way....with a good sized press. Grin

YEP! But a 6 ton press is better because of the jigs that would be horizontal in a vise, and the vise needs to be an extra large one to clear the prop.

Use a socket or something big enough to clear the back of the hub (engine side) and a driver that will bear on the front of the hub (Prop nut side). A press has a lot more mecanical advantage than a vise so if you insist on using a vise, be prepared to use a bit of strength. If the hub comes out easily, that usually means the rubber is shredded or destroyed.

Usually the rubber "donut" will have failed. Sometimes it is shredded and sometimes it is just worn. If it is just worn, you can press it back in with plenty of silicone rubber RTV and it just may be serviceable.

To press in a new hub, use a tapered roller bearing cone about the same size small opening as the hole in the prop. Silicone rubber lubricates extremely well and the hub will press in easily.

Re: Pin drive prop hub

Hi thanks, here's the props in question.
Both of these props have what acted like slipping hubs, I could power up nice and easy and but at a certain point it would act like I just threw it in neutral.
the first one had worked on the motor for many years, the second one was my spare that I had never used and it ended up slipping too, the prop I have on now works fine.
These two are just going to be gunea pigs, you don't see any rubber like you do on splined hubs.

You don't see it but take my word for it: The rubber is in there. It is only about 1/4 inch thick and the rear flange of the hub hides it.
