1988 88SPL, owned for 2 months. Good compression, carbs rebuilt, new spark plugs. Hard starting, lots of smoke, idles like it misses, but runs good at WOT. Will idle good for 2 minutes after WOT, but then starts to miss and more smoke. After running last time, removed the spark plugs and the 2 on the fuel pump side were wet (fuel, not water), the two on the starboard side were dry and brown/gray (normal). What are the chances that there is a hole in the fuel pump membrane that causes a rich situation on the port that wet fouls and causes the smoke? Does the port side drive the membrane? There is also some evidence that the port side may have overheated earlier in its life, but I can keep my hand on both heads after heavy running, so it is not getting hot presently.

It's possible that the 2 on the port side are running too cool and fouling the plugs.. Might want to run a compression check while you're at it..

Compression shows good, all at 120 psi cold. Is it possible a thermostat is stuck open? Does the cooling water travel down the head and through the black rubber hose I see, or does it travel up through the rubber hose into each head?
