I,m getting ready to tear down my lower unit(2000 130 johny).I was getting a slight whining noise at the end of last season. There was no water in the lube but there were some metal pieces stuck on the magnet along with the cream.Ive rebuilt a couple of powerheads with success but never touched a lower unit.I read the manual and it looks straight forward, but im worried about lower shaft pinion bearing removal/installation.Do I need the special tool to do this? Also, are GLM parts good?

Re: Pinion Bearing

OEM parts are always best, but more expensive. I have heard some bad comments about GLM gearcase components if going with aftermarket, Sierra would be a better choice.

Re: Pinion Bearing

Considering the cost of the special tools needed for the pinion bearing removal and replacement, you are better off taking the gearcase to a knowledgeable dealer and having them replace the bearing. The same holds true for shimming the driveshaft and pinion gear if you replace either of those parts or the upper bearings or housing.
