I have 24' Lowe Pontoon with '94 70hp Evinrude - RPM range is 5000-6000 - tach recently quit working last Sept but I remember running 5700 R's at WOT last summer - speed abt 17mph per speedometer - I now have a GPS and will test speed with it.

Current prop is alum 14x13 in decent shape but some nicks - in July will take river trip from B'ham to Mobile - want to buy new prop and keep old for spare - considering Piranha composite prop with changeable blades - thinking about 14x13 and an extra set of blades 13.75x15 to test out - they have 30 day return policy.

Anyone have experience with Piranha?

yes piranha deffinetly has the advantage when boating in rivers because of the possiblilty of hitting rocks, wood, and floating objects, you'll do more damage to your blades than your lower unit w/ piranha props. Also the blades run at the most $22 each so purchasing spare blades to keep on your boat will be inexpensive compared to purchasing and carrying a whole spare prop. check it at www dot piranha dot com if you havent already, the website can help you discover the perfect prop for your motor.

I would make sure to keep plenty of blade on hand, rarely when you hit bottom do you only damage one blade. Most of the time to repair an aluminum propeller is less than the cost of a set of blades. Just some food for thought.

We have put together a discussion and information forum related to propellers and other marine hardware. Please stop by and take a look, ask a question, or just sign up and introduce yourself.

I dont know where you get your props repaired but in this area on average it cost $75 to repair an alluminum prop and to repair our prop the most expensive three blade set is $66.50. Plus with an alluminum prop there's down time because your day is over once its damaged, and then you need to take it into a shop to get it repaired, which can take days. With piranha propellers, you can repair your damaged prop in five minutes at the most, on site, and be able to spend the rest of the day on the lake.
