What is the secret "juice" for de-carboning used pistons during a re-build? Soak in Sea Foam or something else?

Re: Piston carbon removal

I'm from the "old school" and just used a bunch of different types of scrapers. Those chemicals take to long and cost to much.

Re: Piston carbon removal

Many ways to accomplish this. Pistons out of motor? Berrymans dip with the basket works wonders in short order. My local machine shop has an acid dip but don't know the exact formula, he keeps it secret.

I have used alcohol and brillo pads, Seafoam and plastic scrapers, but I tend to stick with soda blasting now. Im lazy and it works well.

For the average guy without a soda blaster the best I have seen is the Berrymans dip in a can.

This suggestion may sound a little out there but if you do have a blaster or can rent one, crushed walnuts work the best. It's what BMW and Audi use to get off the carbon on their pistons and valves when re-building their engines.

Uh......used pistons are not considered part of a rebuild or refurbish. Mike your cylinder bores and measure pistons, anything .003 over spec is considered worn past usable limit.

Re: Piston carbon removal

if you've goine that far to have the pistons out then why not put new ones in unless they are 100% perfect ?
nice new pistons might be well worth that little extra expense in the long term.

but you do need to make sure they are perfect or all that work will be for nothing !!!!!!!!!

That's why they make micrometers. No sense in getting rid of pistons or anything for that matter if they are still serviceable and with in specs.
