The rings for my 1977 70HP do not have straight end, they have a a cut away for the locating pin, and a "bit" that would appear to go on the out side of the locating pin. Qustion where is the end gap measured, from the cut out or the actual end of the ring

Thanks

Gap is measured from the actual ends of the ring, the ends that would contact IF the gap was too small.

You are correct that the 'notch' is to fit the locating pin. The rings do have an upside, if installed upside down they either will not fit at all, or if you do manage to get them in, they will fail in a very short time.

The gap should be checked in an unworn part of the bore. Important that the ring is in square so use the piston to push it level.
