piston ring ?

i just rebuilt one of my 1975 merc 850 motors. After putting it in the water i found a water leak. When i went to replace the gasket two of the holes were so corroded that it would not hold a bolt. I retaped the holes but they kept stripping, so i tightened them as best i could but it is still leaking. I only have about 2-3 hours on the new rings. Is there any way i can use the new rings on another motor or is it to late. Please help!!!!

i wouldn't worry about swapping rings, they should be ok, they arn't like bearings. wouldn't it be easier to get the holes drilled out and helicoiled with new threads?
