I need to replace two pistons. Can I do that with the power head on the lower unit or do i have to remove ro a complete case split. I have orderd a manual but I havent gotten it yet. I was just wondering I figure it would be easier to but less manual work installed. thanks for any help.

You have to tear it slap apart. The pistons are the last thing to come out. Better wait for the manual, there are lots of other things you need to know.

Re: piston swap

Question.. why just two pistons?..
..a motor that old is probably ready for 4 new .020" over pistons/rings and a fresh bore, new main bearings and a COMPLETE gasket set..-replacing ALL gaskets...
with a cold motor.. shut off! - grab the flywheel and see if you can move it side to side...either direction... there should be no movement! If there is movement..you need to replace the end bearings too!
If your motor uses "cracked" rods (big end).. be very careful to get them realigned PERFECTLY! OMC makes a tool to do this with.. I have better luck with my hands..but I've been building two cycle race engines for 30+ years!
This is not a hard job. Pretty simple really.
take pictures of the wiring and anything you are NOT INTIMATELY familiar with! Use plenty of assembly lube!
