Pitted aluminum in transom

Hey all, check out my pics of the pitted aluminum in the outer skin of the transom on my 17' Blue Fin. Pitting does not go through the entire skin anywhere, but is fairly deep in places. could I or should I just apply another layer of alum next to it? If I should, how would I go about that? Simply rivet together? bond with some adhesive? what kind?
Transom will hold a mid 80's 40 hp 4-stroke and a brand spankin new 4 hp 4-stroke.

i have an 89 with the same problem. obviously salt water. what is did was fill the worst with marine JB weld. sand and a coat of rustoleum. you might want to add a sacrafical anode to help with the electrolisis.

Re: Pitted aluminum in transom

I'm not sure what previous life this boat had as far as salt water goes, it seems likely though. I have only had it in fresh water. Columbia river and Okanogan river to be exact. Thanks for your tip, I will give that a try.
I should have started this project in January by the way things are popping up here and there. I knew I would find suprises but didn't think there would be this many. Salmon season is open and my ride is still in dry dock. (my garage) I suppose the lessons learned along the way will bear fruit at some point.

Re: Pitted aluminum in transom

not trying to high jack thread but my transom on my aluminum bass boat is pitted real bad. some spots go all the way through. there are a few spots on the bottom of the boat. i was thinking of filling the holes with rivets. is there a chance to just weld the holes that go all the way through. i just ordered a hobart 187 and was going to try to weld the holes. i cut a sheet of 6061-T6 .025 to go over the transom on the inside.
