Rebuilding a 65ESL73R because of water getting into the bottom cylinder. Pulled the crank and discovered the bottom rod journal has moderate pitting. I've tried to clean it up using 120 emery but some of the pits are quite deep. They also run across the bearing surface. I've read that JB weld can be used to fill in pits and then be sanded down. Opinions?

????------------Sorry but J-B weld for that repair is nonsense.--------Look for another crankshaft.---Is bearing surface on the rod damaged from rust as well?

The rod looks fine as does the rest of the crank. it is only the journal pictured here

I know there are going to be some or many to poo-poo this, but it's still the truth.

As long as the journal is round, true(not tapered), and smooth you are good to use it. The pits will only give a little more room for oil.

Edit, after seeing that pic, it's probably to far gone to use like it is. Have it turned or replace it.

Re: pitted crankshaft

Water sneaks in and corrodes even where you can not see it.------If put together like that it will simply not last very long!!!----Not many shops can do a proper repair of a bad journal like that.--------It is a hardened surface and part of a precision bearing.

Big POO-POO and untrue as bearing suface must be smooth and undamaged. That is what we call a washboard damaged crank and bearing will spall and fail if ran like this. If you check rod it will most likely have the same marking on it and will need to be replaced. That crank will need replaced..

Re: pitted crankshaft

The rod most certainly would have the same sort of marks.----Did you just buy this motor ?--Any history on the motor ?---Perhaps someone just replaced the rod just recently !

Re: pitted crankshaft

You need a new crankshaft. Post a pic of the rod surfaces.

Re: pitted crankshaft

Be sure to remove the exhaust covers and replace the gaskets. It is about 90% certain that a warped baffle plate caused that. They warp along the exhaust ports and water then squirts right into the ports. It happens very often. I'd say it almost notorious for that happening.

Probably a moot question anyway, unless you can find a good crank. A new one would be very $$$$. And that one is junk, no doubt about it.

Re: pitted crankshaft

I bought the motor from a guy this summer. He said he pulled it from his boat, tied it to a post under a shed, and there it sat for 3 years. I assume he pulled the motor because it wasn't running well.

Re: pitted crankshaft

I pulled the exhaust covers as I am rebuilding the entire motor. The baffle plate is indeed warped and I've located a couple that I am assured are good. I've also located a couple of cranks on Ebay that look good.

Re: pitted crankshaft

took a quick glance at that bottom rod. It also has a similar pitting pattern as seen on the crank. Looks like a total piston and rod purchase is in order

Re: pitted crankshaft

just a quick question....what causes the washboard pattern in the crank and connecting rod?

That is where the rollers / crankshaft / rod touch with water betweem them.-------Now the eletrolysis starts to eat the material away.-----------Look up galvanic corrosion and electrolysis using ------google
