Guys,

Still working on the old Volvo Penta Aluminum Outdrives. Many thanks for all the help so far.

I've read a few posts on repair but I've got one big question. The outdrive's I'm refurbing have been stripped down to bare aluminum, but they have significant pitting which I intended to fill in with JB Weld Marine.

The sticky posts suggest using Alodine to etch for painting. I'm assuming I should put this on AFTER I've filled the pits with JB Weld. Is that correct?

Thanks!

Re: Pitting Question

Hey B, if you are going to paint it you do not need alodine as it only protects bare aluminum. if it is bare AL then I would alodine first then fill the pits.

Re: Pitting Question

Hello BigBob..

Well at first I woulda said Alumiprep, Alodine..then fill..

But your probably going to be sanding your JB smooth which will break the surface back down to alum...

So at this point I would say AS long as its clean.. do your JB..sand and fair.. then apply your Alumiprep then Alodine..then your Primer and paint coatings.

YD.
