Did you haul it in a northern state in the winter or spring after salt was spread on the roads?
I experienced the same issue after having to put my boat in storage the same day of a suprize snowfall and subsequent salt spreading by our county road commission. What I should have done was follow up with a bucket or two of warm soapy water and a rinse before letting it sit all winter.
