Ya I know, real dumb move but it's done and now I'm trying to get Pivot Pin back in. I've followed the great tips here, and It seems with the motor upside down and using two darts I can move the piece enough to line up the hole, with the dart , or at the very least find the hole but it jumps back out of alignment when I need to remove the dart to insert the Pivot Pin. Almost feels like a spring moving it out of alignment. yes, I have fiddled with the gear shift, gently, but is there a method to the madness of keeping the holes lined up long enough to get the pivot pin back in?.. please and thank you.

There is a spring and two balls in the propeller shaft to provide a detent for the clutch dog in neutral and to hasten shifting into gear. Have you tried it with the engine on its side?

I did , but not with the dart solution. Why would having the engine on side lessen the impact of the spring?..... Is it a matter of finding the sweet spot where the holes will line up by jiggling the gear shift?...

It takes gravity out of the equation. Wiggling the shift lever while using an awl, or dart, then trying to replace the awl with the screw pin is the way most try to do it. I can't recall if there is a gasket on that screw

There is an old trick that may work. Grind or file a bevel on the end of the pivot pin so it resembles a chisel. Now if you can get the holes even half aligned, stick the pointy-ended pivot pin in and with slight inward pressure, rotate it. Hopefully it will pull the parts into alignment and slide on in.
