Well, Nick, you could do that, but I think it would be a bad idea.

A much better idea would be to get a 20" lower end for your engine or trade it for one that has a 20" lower end.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Since you are looking for 5" I'm not sure that would do it. True -- it would help but I don't think it will solve the problem. And you end up with an odd ball transom height.

Maybe it would be easier to buy the extension kit for the motor. Just a thought.

Good luck!

I hv 20 inch transom with a 90 hp Mariner main engine 20 inch shaft. I hv another older engine which is a 40 hp Selva but 15 inch shaft. I hv to notch the transom by 3 inch to get the Selva cavitation plate to level with the bottom of the boat as a kicker motor. I am satisfied with the setup but the only problem with notch transom is that the Selva lower unit now sit about 3 inch in the salt water. It was easy to clean the barnacle from the marina pontoon because the Selva is on the port side but I found a better solution. I just wrap the whole lower unit into garbage bag, fill in with fresh water and tied it to the lower unit.

The best solution would be to change the Selva from 15 inch to 20 inch but it cost more to make the change compare to cutting the transom.

Howdy, Sudden Impulse. When the time comes to repower, how are you gonna "uncut" that transom??

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Hi J.B. Cornwell,
It will probably took me at least 5-6 years before I need to repower the Selva 40hp 15" shaft kicker motor. I will stick to 15" shaft because of the slight weight saving but if I can afford to change boat, I'll get a 20" shaft kicker motor and keep the transom intact. My 40 hp Selva is only 54 kg [118lb]. My next kicker motor will be any brand around that horsepower range and weight. I am really looking at the best power to weight ratio. At the moment, Selva 40 hp cross flow is the best in class. The next best is Johnson 30 hp cross flow. Maybe by that time some manufacturer will compete in power to weight ratio for 2-stroke outboard around 30-50 hp range. I hv to keep the kicker motor as light as possible to maintain balancing on a long but narrow beam boat.
