Sort of a sequel to my thread about "Special Financing" or spinoff from that thread. "Plan B in action",... what does that mean? It means I will have to go used and pay cash. You thought I had ignored your input from the other thread about "special financing". Read on,...because I have not ignored your input at all. After thinking long and hard about it,...I thought to myself "Why in the heck would anybody want to try and get special financing for an outfit that a guy could probably pay cash for on a $5,000.00 outfit?" It will take some time,...but I bought one of those "Wheels and Deals" trader type ad papers and found what I might be looking for in the future. It was a Sea Nymph 14 Ft. boat w/ trailer/and 15 HP Johnson motor for about $850.00.
When I can find one later on,and I have the cash for it,that is what I will go after,...or at least something similar to it. I am going to also keep an eye out for one on this site on the brand name related boards for Sea Nymph. I will
also check on Alumacraft,Crestliner, and of course,Lund,as well for good used
outfits in that price range or close to it anyway. Now,...let me point out that
this will not take place today. It is going to take some time to find the right
one at the right time.

Good to hear. That was my point in your other thread, for this type of boat even if I could EASILY afford a brand spanking new one, I'd still go used because I really don't think you're sacrificing much in the way of reliability. The Sea Nymph you posted would be perfect. Good luck.

In reference to your question about where to find "Craigs List"....It is a web site similar to e-bay but not quite a s formal...Go to www.craigslist.com and follow the links.
very easy site to navigate.
Good luck

Lundman - I am all too familiar with your situation...but thats another story.

I wrestled with the same things you did, and like you, decided that I had to bite the bullet and get whatever I could pay cash for. Which happened to be a 14' v-hull fiberglass fishing boat that I bought off craigslist for $400. I called around to several boat dealers and asked if they had any used small outboards for sale. Some did and wanted $400+ for them, but one dealership had a 7.5 HP Chrysler with the recoil starter broke and some "carb issues". He said his mechanic works for $75 an hour and he couldnt justify fixing something that small, so I took it home for $50.

Thanks in LARGE part to this forum, and a few phone calls, emails later, and some blood on my knuckles I launched my new rig for the first time last weekend at the lake.

Ran great. Im happy. Although I want a bigger one that I can pull the kids on tubes and skis.

So I guess thats my "Plan B" in action.

Best of luck to you. Craigslist rocks by the way.

Re: "Plan B" in action

Our “Plan B” boat was not a decision based on the price of boats here (Germany), they are being given away right now. It was based on the cost of everything involved in having a boat here.

Parking & storage (can't park on the street for more than 24hours), so it must fit in our garage, trailer hitch systems & inspection, trailer, trailer inspections & tags, insurance, launch fees (about $400 a day), no public launch ramps, we are limited to river usage. This all adds up to upper 4 digit cost per year without ever actually getting in the water or filling up with gas.

I looked around at inflatables about 3000 Euro plus motor, to expensive for what they are, and not the best boat for where we live. If we lived on the ocean or a large lake, I would still like to have one, but ...

So I re-built and converted a old sail/row boat I got for free, that was going to the shredder/dump, into a small motor boat for the river where we live, and picked a motor on up E-Bay.

Right now, ready to go in the water, with registration, motor, new gas tanks & lines, small home made trailer thing, anchor, oars, ropes, fenders, flotation seat cushions, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tie downs, PFD's, sun glasses, sun tan lotion, and all the material that was needed to rebuild/convert I have much less than $400 in it all together.

Just don't ask how much of my spare time was used up, in the last month and a half.

It is not my dream boat and it is not a boat that would fulfill the needs of most people here, but it is just what I wanted for running the German rivers during the summer.

Hope this post is not considered “Hijacking”. I just wanted to point out you can have fun on the water without signing your life away, or winning the Lotto.

Good luck & enjoy being cheap Lundman. It is not all that bad! :D

P.S. i just made the sun glasses & sun tan lotion part up!

Your "Plan B" is always my plan A. There are too many good used boats around and I won't justify the expense of a new one. Let someone else work the new boat issues out and let them eat the depreciation.

Look for a well cared for boat. There are a lot of them out there with very few hours for their age.

Good luck

Re: "Plan B" in action

Just came from the Sea Nymph board and was looking over specs for older Sea Nymphs, and found the model I would like to aquire eventually. I would
be looking for about a 1989 to 1990 Sea Nymph Model 14R w/25 hp Johnson or Evinrude motor,...short shaft, and manual or electric start(would prefer manual start to keep costs down so I won't have to mess with a battery).
According to the spec chart, that boat is rated for 25 HP motor. My goal is to hopefully find one in the $850.00 to $1,200.00 range. I would take an FM161 w/ 50 hp Johnson motor, but not sure what one of these in the this model year range would go for. This is just to give you an example,...but this is the one Sea Nymph I would definitely consider in the used market. Screw the EPA,
...I am sticking with two strokes,...and that would definitely mean going with Johnson or Evinrude. I really don't care much for Mercury. Give me an older OMC motor any day of the week!
