Plane ? which motor

Im going to buy a grizzly 1754 cc and it comes with a 50 horse two stroke for about 12000 but with a 25 horse four stroke it cost about 8500 and i was wonderding if the smaller motor would get the boat on plane with 2 adults and possably 2 kids on board, most of the time i will be by myself running rivers and small lakes Thanks for any input.

there are a lot of folks in certain places on these forums taht say get the biggest motor that will go on the boat your getting.

i have been in a flat bottom boat a few times and didnt care for the rides as they were in chop in various bays in texas on the gulf coast. riding flat bottom boats is like getting paddled by the principle in school non-stop. they are good on calm days but choppy water and its a miserable ride. the motors on the ones i have been on have been 25 hp and takes em a bit to get on plane with more than one person. it also depends on where those people are in the boat as to how fast it gets on plane.

your other choice is the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.

2 stroke your always adding oil to the fuel and if you have a boating season due to weather you really cant do much withthe extra gas other than dump some stabilizer in it for the winter and hop its good in the spring. ethonal gas and 2 strokes do not get along well at best. personally i find 2 strokes to be a pain in the butt as you always have to be mucking with the fuel mix. they also dump unburnt oil into your fishing waters from the fuel oil mix. 4 strokes are about like maintaining your car engine oil system. 4 strokes are also a little heavier than 2 strokes hp for hp.

the 25hp will get you on plane at some point slower than than the 50. its really more a question of money and how fast you wanna get where you are going.

i fish lakes and even the biggest ones are like a 15-20 minute ride from end to end where i live short of lake michigan itself.

one thing that might be worth trying is finding a boat rental and rent one similar to the one your looking at with the same hp motor and giving it a ride. there may be other issues you dont like about the model your looking at taht will only raise its head by driving one.
