Ok, my girlfriend(who knows lots about tools, woodworking, etc...), was telling me that she wants to take her electric hand planer and make a table for it. Similiar to a router table.
It will be mounted upside down, so you can just run your 2X4's over top of it.

I was questionable about her idea; I know that the cheapest 4-post planer that Home Depot sells is a couple hundred $$$.

Also, I'm not sure how well it will plane the wood, if you can't see how it is cutting it until you turn it over and look at it.

So, I'm asking for some opinions if you think her idea will work properly, or would it be better to just buy a 4-post planer?

I'll buy a nice planer, if it is justified...so help me justify it guys

Re: Planer table

I would go with the new planer but it sounds like her intention's are to use it as a jointer. To plane 2x4's in that fashion is a good way to loose your finger tips IMO.

Re: Planer table

Someone would be marketing a table table if her idea was acceptable

Yeah, I agree witht the safety issue as well.
I hope she is not going to be mad at me for posting this.
Any other ideas or thoughts on this issue would be great.
I'm going to show her this thread tonight(then I'll show her the 4-post planers at Home Depot and see what she thinks).

Re: Planer table

i dont think it would be any more dangerous than a regular jointer seen plenty of fingers go in those :(

BUT it would be real hard to have hafe the table adjust the height correctly like a real jointer

tommays

I'm with tommays. Push sticks keep your hands out of the way.
I'd go with the 4 post planer, be sure to get one with the cutterhead lock. Practically eleminates snipes. And get the hood to catch the shavings with your ShopVac.
John

BC
Before you buy one go here

http://www.woodmagazine.com/

It is the iboats of the wood working world

About 1/2 down the page it will say tool reviews
Click on it.

In the first paragraph towards the bottom in purple it has a link to "Tools & Tool Buying forum"
Look around for 6" jointers
Or you can go to the general wood working forum and ask questions there.

Here is an example of a 6: jointer question http://dgroups.woodmagazine.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&tid=7622&webtag=toolsandbuying

btw Lowes does sell a very low end one for around a hundered but trust me its not worth it.
A freind bought one... nuff said ;)

Learn a little before just going out and buying one. Jointers even in the low end table top models are worth their weight in gold if you get the right one.

Luck to ya
