I have a 19' Carolina Skiff. The capacity plate rates hp from 50-90 hp. I have a 1978 50hp Mercury w/ 4 cylinders. I purchased the used engine because of the 4 cylanders which I need because I tend to troll all day. At first, the boat planed out well (top speed 25 mph) w/ my son and I on board. After a couple of trips out I could never get it over 13mph. I changed the plugs and the first day it ran great again, then back to sluggish. It would run at lower rpm's then spike up rpms suddenly for a second or two then drop again. I have changed plug wires, and installed water separator/fuel filter - no changes. Any suggestions ? Also, I don't know if it is related, but it does smoke a little white smoke - not much though. Thanks

Re: Planing/Speed Problems

If you would, read one of my posts I made on this page about Sea Foam. Its the post that says "anyone with a possible fuel problem, read first."<br /> Anyways, Trash could be in your fuel system somewhere, possibly in your caborator jets. If Sea foam doesnt clear the problem, rebuilding your carborators may be the next task at hand. Also, check to see if your fuel pump diaphram has a hole in it, before you take it apart, go ahead and buy a new one to replace it. A $4.00 do it yourself job.
