Plastic deck?

I have a 2000 fisher 180 fish and the carpet is getting bad. The deck isn't plywood; it's white plastic or nylon or pvc. I really don't know what it is, but it looks like it will never need to be replaced. The carpet is glued to it and I don't want to ruin the deck with harsh chemicals. What to use to remove the glue and what to cover it with is the question. It doesn't look like any sort of paint would stick, so I'll probably use carpet. Anybody know what this deck is made of?

Re: Plastic deck?

I have a poker table made from that, I believe it is recycled milk jugs, they had a sheet at work(Bennington marine) that they work thinking about using but it was to expensive/heavy and they let me have it.

When you are trying chemicals it is best to start with the weakest first and work up, it depends what kind of glue they used also, you may no find a solvent that will remove it, try a little bit of whatever you have on a small part of the deck to see what it will do.

If you are going to recarpet you really don't need to remove it, just get it smoothed out and reglue on top of it, I see a heat gun and scraper in your future.

I'm pretty sure that company is still in business, so I would call them for advice.

Time consuming but I'm with Mr crabs there. A heat gun carefully used to loosen the glue and scraping up as much residue as you can without damaging the underlying surface is the way to go. Should yield a nice tacky surface to lay down your new carpet.

Re: Plastic deck?

Kind of will depend on what type of glue they used, and what type of plastic the deck is made from.

My 01 Crestliner, yeah, yeah, no the same, had the carpet glued down with a clear sticky hot-melt type glue. Get it hot (aluminum hull baking in the LV sun for a couple hours) and the carpet would peel right off, the glue would be sticky too, like it was just applied. Cool it down and it would harden, well, just like hot melt glue. Trying to sand and scrape that stuff was futile, it had to be removed by soaking in solvent, lacquer thinner. Though, I don't know how lacquer thinner will agree with your plastic deck, could be fine, could eat a hole clear through it...

You won't really know what's going to work until you get some carpet up and see what will remove the glue easily. Could be scraping, sanding, sharpened 4-6" wide putty knife, solvent?

Just peel the old carpet and re-glue the new stuff. I know that a cup brush on an angle grinder USED WITH A LIGHT TOUCH will remove the glue. I have stripped glue off od plywood that way and not penetrated the soft plywood. Light touch is the key.

Yes Fisher's had great construction methods until Tracker Marine became their parent company. I had an older fisher bass boat that had all aluminum decks and no wood...... now they use wood for decks.
