Hi,
My 898 Mercruiser has plates sandwiched between gaskets between the
exhaust manifolds and risers. These plates come in two versions. Does
anyone know their purpose?

The plates (usually with no coolant passage holes) seperate the manifold from the risers when the manifolds are part of the closed cooling system. With antifreeze in the manifolds and engine.
