Hi Guys,
Noob in boats old hand in life. Today I went to look at a Four Winns 240 Horizon from 1995. I don't have photos at the moment, my son took some on his phone and I will post them when he sends them to me. This is a bit of a story, so I apologise if it rambles on a bit.

I live in southern Spain, saw the boat in a broker's window and decided to take a look. The boat's story is a bit shady. The Volvo engine has been replaced by a Mercruiser 5.7 V8, but the out-drive is original Volvo. I know the engine came from a 2000 boat, but I don't know the hours, or the hours on the out-drive. The engine and drive are not my main concern at the moment. Neither is the upholstery, which needs to be completely recovered.

My main concern is possible rot. I know that the boat sat in the sea at a marina berth for 2 years up to around September last year. The boat was completely without covers of any kind, in 2 of the very wettest winters this area has known. She is on a trailer now and I climbed aboard to have a look. I pressed the ball of my foot on the deck wherever I could and felt no soggy spots. On lifting the centre storage cover I expected to be able to see the stringers and bulkheads of the compartment, but they were covered with carpet, well stuck on... but the carpet was wet at the bottom. As was the carpet in the forward underseat areas.

Bearing in mind we are now in one of the driest winters in many years (maybe 3 days of rain all winter, only 1 heavy), Should I run and run fast? Or is it plausible that it's wet and not suffering rot? The guy wants ?8000 for the boat which is not hugely expensive, but it's not cheap.

I have read so many stories on here by people who ask your opinion when they are already up the creek. I want to avoid the creek completely, with your help.

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

Should I run and run fast?

Yes. Four Winns makes a nice boat but they are not "self bailing fiberglass liner leave 'em outside uncovered and it'll be ok" kinda boats. 2 years in an uncovered slip at the very least has started to rot this hull.

Re: Please advise me.

See friscoboater's thread

Should be required reading for all thinking of buying a used boat. BUT, also know that the guys @iBoats will step up & help no matter how bad or ugly your 'find' turns out to be. They will also tend to lend a hand quite a bit more when there are photos.....

Look thru some of the 'Sticky notes' at the forum start page, maybe do a search on 'your' boats make & model, see if anyone else has done your boat. They may give you some areas to check before you buy & ways to help point out problems that will lower the price...

Sticky note info

PS: What is that 8000 in US$?

Good luck.... And if you buy a used boat, welcome to the iBoats dry dock.

Re: Please advise me.

one word.........RUN.

your economy is in the toilet as well......boats will be cheap. that one is not.

a volvo to merc conversion will only have you scrambeling for parts.......its what we call a franken motor.

the hull WILL need $2500 us and two months in labour.

the wet carpet means the hull was saturated.

one quick way to tell for sure........ask if the marina can weigh the boat.....lol....if it is more than 50 lbs over manufacturers specs...it is waterlogged.
If he says "NO" that means he already knows and is trying to rip you off !

Waterlogging means a full gut.......
a full gut.....is when all the seats are removed.....the floor comes up...(that means new carpet) the flotation foam comes out...the stringers come out....the motor comes out.....the drive comes off.....the enitre top section of the boat comes off...(this is called a cap removal...)

Did I scare ya yet?..... i can keep going if you wish !

I have to agree...I was surprised how much a carpet held moisture even after I dried it out....I kept thinking where is it coming from and then it dawned on me. The rotten wood was holding the moisture also. So I would say that if you "wet carpet" you can bet that there is wet wood also. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the thoughts. 8K euro is just short of USD 10,500. When I look at the pictures I wonder why I ever bothered you good people. I'm a-runnin.

Going to look at a 2001 FW 180 tomorrow. 4.3 Volvo, brand new 18 months ago. It sounds like the old one threw a rod. Anything in particular I should look out for.... besides waterlogging, that is. :D Any owners of this boat that can report on performance would be helpful.

Thanks again,
