Hello Everyone

I am in the process of repaint my '93 120 Evinrude. The motor seemed to run okay before I started the project; however, I have not owned it long and have nothing to compare it to. There is a lot of corrosion and discoloration on the bottom of the starboard head. Below, you will find a link to both the port and starboard head for comparison. Please take a look and tell me what you think. Also, if there is an easy way to post the images in the thread, please let me know where I can find the instructions.

Thanks,

Grits

The port head is first and the starbord head is second.

Doesn't look like an issue. Have you done a compression check? How do the numbers compare?

Steve

I did a compression check when I bought the boat and the very good. I cannot remember the number but is was around 120 and they were very close. I would have done one when I started looking at the head but the following image will show you that was very impractical.

If it looks like it is a problem or a potential problem, I want to fix it now when it will be easy, in my shop, rather when the fish are biting. Bad things happen to you boat on Friday afternoon when the fish are biting.

Thanks,

Grits

It looks like some rust and corrosion, clean the rust with a wire brush and paint it to protect it.

Do ya'll know why it is on one head and the other if fine? I have not had much experience with outboards that have been used in salt water. Is that what is known as salt creep?

I will clean and paint it. Is there any reason to replace the head gasket and corroded head bolts?

Thanks,

Grits

I would do another compression check before you start any teardown.

I suppose salt creep would be a pretty good explanation. Whatever, it is very common for salt water outboards to do that. (Even fresh water ones--just takes longer). What you are seeing externally is not an indication that it is getting past the sealing ring around the cylinders, inside.

Your motor doesn't show signs of overheating, so my advice is clean it up and paint it if you want to. Sleep well, no problem.

corrosion-x is a good product to keep corrosion down, google it to find a supplier or check with your local marine dealer.

That's pretty clean for a salty... I have to wonder in the previous owner ever covered the engine...tarp-type cover, or some people even have used a plastic bag. By the way...this is a bad NO-NO to cover an engine in storage. Vented tarp is ok,but I still leave mine off when in the garage.
I'd say you have no worries...the paint in that location may have been thin enough that some bare metal was exposed, hence the rust.
