First off, 1980 Evinrude 50 hp model #E50ELCSR

Have been having problems with tach and now charging. Have read a lot of post so I decided to test the electrics on the motor as much as I could. I replaced the rectifier few weeks ago and the tach worked good for a while. I didn't check the charging system until last week when I got my fish finder hooked up. Fortunately it has a volt reading in one of the displays so I can monitor it. Over the weekend, I didn’t notice any voltage increase while running the motor. I am thinking I have a short in the charge coil/stator assembly from my testing and the symptoms. The testing indicated an open circuit when testing the charge soil/stator and now with the way my tach has been working on and off, that sounds like the like conclusion. If this sound correct, let me know and many thanks to all the great advice this forum has provided me.

Also, can this problem ruin the rectifier? Would hate to have to replace it again but will if needed.

Did you test the two yellow wires from the stator for voltage with the engine running? If memory serves me ,it should read around 18-20 Volts A/C.

A lot of times these (burnout of stator and/or rectifier) are due to flaky wiring in the BOAT, rather than in the powerhead. Loose battery connections, flaky wiring in the boat itself, etc..

Dave...When you say you did not notice any voltage increase when the engine was running, what was the voltage? Was it low when running, like below 12 volts or was it a constant voltage of at least 12.8 or something?

Sorry guys, i screwed up my post. I meant to say that I had an infinity reading when I tested the resistance from the 4 prong connector and the stator base. The other readings (thru the stator)were right where they should be. The clymer book said this reading would indicate a short.

This is on a brand new boat I just built and all the wiring is new (except the motor). All the wiring I have installed is at least 14 gauge and the main wire for the starter is 4 guage.

I did not take any readings while the boat was running. I will try to do that tonight.

The voltage I got last night while running was around 12.6+/-. Late saturday on the water I was getting 12.3+/-. It never seems to go above 13.0.

I would have taken off the flywheel last night to investigate but didn't have the correct size socket. Will be doing that tonight to see what it looks like.

Thanks again!

Dave,
You are testing the wrong wires if you are testing the wires in the 4 prong connector. You need to be testing the 2 yellow wires that connect to the rectifier at the terminal strip. You must disconnect to test. Ohm readings between two yellow wires should be over 0 ohms. Between each yellow wire and ground, infinity.

Todd
