I am currently in the process of restoring my boat. After reading many, many, many posts on here i still do not understand the process or the terminalogy of bedding the stringers into the hull.

Will someone please dummy it down for a 3 year old to understand it. I have very little knowledge of glassing so i need all the help i can get.

I dont know what to use so be very clear if you dont mind. Also maybe someone knows where to get what i need for this project.

Many thanks

Re: Please Dummy It Down

Bucs, I'm no pro, but a lot of people just use PL Premium Construction Adhesive to bed the stringer to the hull. The purpose is mostly to create a layer of bonding material between the bottom of the stringer and the hull. No hard point contact from the stringer on the hull to eliminate the chance of the stringer during times when the hull is under stress. After it is bedded you can either tab the stringer to the hull or wrap it fully over the top of the stringer. I'm sure more detailed advice from people who know the drill will follow.

your right on there steve , you just lay a bead of it all the way down where the stringer sits !! and on the bottom of the transom , then just glass it in !! I used the PL Premium on mine !! John

Yup i used PL as well. I used a healthy bead all the way down the the bottoms of the stringers. It is cheaper to use the bigger tubes. I got the bigger gun so you can use the larger size tubes of the PL i forget what the bigger size is but i do remember its cheaper than buying the smaller size tubes. When i was done bedding the stringers they were solidly standing up when the pl set without any crossmembers or bulkheads. It was pretty amazing how well the stuff bonds.

Just make absolutely sure its the right height, width and square to the stern.
seal the unwaxed fiberglass, I used brushed on gel coat. if your looking for strength notch the transom ply.

Re: Please Dummy It Down

What gets used under the stringer isn't that important, the goal is to just keep it up off the hull slightly. If the wood only makes contact with the hull in couple spots it may create a hard spot that won't flex the same as the surrounding area and crack. Some people just use foam in couple of spots, others fill the gap with putty, but it serves no structural purpose, so it really doesn't matter what's used.
