Hey Folks!

Stumbled across these forums today and had to join due to the tremendous amount of awesome information! So I took this '78 Starcraft out of my parents barn over the weekend and towed it back to Washington with me. It's in amazing shape, but the 140 in the boat has a cracked block. They have a complete 120 that "supposedly" was in running condition 4 years ago before it was stored in the barn with the boat. I'm looking for any help for swapping these 2 motors out. Consider me extreme newbie!

Thanks much!!

Pull outdrive
Change water pump/impeller at least
Remove engine
Insert new engine
Use alignment bar to line up engine and coupler
install outdrive
gas and go

lol

WELCOME ABOARD!

Haha yeah thanks, in my case though easier said then done! Been searching thru the forums for a "how to" guide on doing all that. Any chance you know of a link for pulling the outdrive and such? I've begun to inch my way forward, but I'm starting to get scared!

Do you have a manual? Its all not as hard as it seems. Ask Ezmobee..If I can get an old I/O running..anybody can.
Look here for a manual..

then here as well..Lots of good info

I think #3 is your huckleberry..

There are 6 bolts holding the OD on..Its rather simple.
The motor not as easy but fairly straight forward.
You have about 1200 fellow I/O owners on here to walk you through anything you want to do..

Thanks much for the links! I was able to score a manual from a neighbor too which helped a ton. I got the old 140 all stripped down and just have 2 bolts holding it in for stability, removed the wire harness and put it on the 120, and removed the outdrive. I'm active duty Navy and talked with the mechanic at the Navy marina and he's letting me bring it in tomorrow to use the over head hoist to swap the motors out. Let's hope putting it all back together goes smoothly lol.

The 120 going in was a runner when it came out of it's last boat, but that was 4 years or 5 years ago. I'm just praying it will come to life. I'd love to be on the water pulling me some yummy dungeness crab by Sunday!

Squirt some marvel mystery oil in the spark plug holes to loosen her up a bit. Transmission fluid works good too.

Lots of support here for you.

After you put oil in the spark plug holes, try to turn the engine over. Bottom front center of engine, may be a pully there, there should be a bolt (holding pully on or similar) Put a socket on it and try to turn the engine over. If it doesn't turn easily, you have a problem.

I got the motors swapped out, just need to install an exhaust boot coming from the manifold. The 2 motors had different manifolds and the old one didnt fit. I'm going to attempt to use a high temp 3" hose as the boot and hope it holds up. I also hooked up all the wiring and it successfully cranked over with the key. Tomorrow will be drive alignment, outdrive install, and fuel. I'm getting a little giddy thinking this thing could be running by tomorrow night.

Thank you all for the great tips that has gotten me this far, this fast. I really appreciate it and judging from the excitement in my kid's faces, so do they.

Everything hooked up, and the motor started right up! Guess everything got hooked up right lol. Do any of you guys know about a "shift interruptor"? It's shifting and throttling up funky. In addition, when I pull it back to neutral it just stays in gear or at really high rpm. I have to kill the engine to get it to reset. My neighbor said because I went from a 140 to 120 the shift interruptor needs adjusted.

Thanks again!
