You need to index your improvised pointer. Use a dial gauge with at least a 1" travel. Bring #1 Up to tdc then go .60 past it and come back to .554 or .491 which ever your engine calls for. Their should be a mark on your flywheel that shows this position and that's where you set your pointer. Then use a timing light at cranking speed and set your initial timing at 3btdc and your max at 27atdc. Start the engine and at 700 RPM recheck the intial and at 3000 RPM check the max. Those settings should be set according to the book and the initial cranking settings discarded. They are only to get you up and running.

Make sure you do a full Link and Synch or all of your timing settings will have been wasted time.

Thanks for your help. I did use dial indicator after finding .464 atdc made a pointer bolted on to starter bolt. aligned it to 0 deg adj to 5 deg per manual.
i will set it to 3 deg. 27 sounds better than 21 per manual at wot. might can get it with screw close to all the way in. will try and let you know.

Humm, I'm unclear, did your set the pointer to 0 when the dial indicator was at .464 or did you set it the small dot on the flywheel that indicates .464. I can't see how you could see the zero at .464 but who knows so I thought I'd check.
Also the 3 and 27 are just starting points. The switchbox bias does a lot of timing adjustment so that's why you have to reset it once you get it running.
