I am in the very last stages of finishing up all my fiberglass work on some rotted stringers. I will be ready this week to rebuild the floor over the rotted area in the stringers.

What I need to know is what type of foam to put back under this floor. I had asked once before but never got an answer. I plan on having this done by next weekend so I do need to get this part ready so that later this week I will be ready to use it.

A dumb question is would Great stuff work? Or must it be a 2 part foam? And if so which foam is the best. I want to make sure it is done right, and I don't want to loose any flotation ability just to be safe.

Thanks,
Bryan

I've used Great Stuff before to seat a gas tank in the hull of a boat. As far as it's effect on the floatability of your boat.... there's only one way to find out !!!!! Hopefully you won't have to try it.

Re: Please help guys.

The area that I need to fill back in, is about 2 feet on each side of the boat, by about 8 inches deep at the deepest spot. This is the lowest point beside the stringer, and then about 1/2 at the highest point. I would say each of these cavities, where I removed the foam is about 12 inches wide.

Thanks for the information. I want to put something back in it for strength to be on the safe side, I do want to make sure there is no float problems either though, just in case.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Please help guys.

Great Stuff is not as bouyant as the 2 part foam. Also it is not as strong and I do believe it is not a closed cell foam so will get soggy rather quickly if any water gets to it.

Re: Please help guys.

Where would you recommend locally getting the Closed Cell 2 part Foam?

Thanks,
Bryan

Call your local packing companies, you will probably need less than a pint of each of the solution... if you find someone cool, they might even give it to you. Wish I had kept my leftovers from our project here at work, could have gave it to you.
