Please help - head temp sensor

I have a temp sender that mounts to the outside of the power head, there is a z-type bracket that holds the sender to the head and a wire that runs to the gauge. I thought this sender may have gone bad as I was getting faulty readings at the gauge, we tested the gauge by removing the wire and grounding it out the gauge read full-hot. When I installed the new sender that I got from Napa it read the same as the old, key on 160 degrees cold. Any ideas about what is going on? Need more details?

Just ran a new line from the sender to the guage and got the same results must not be the wire... Any help or trouble shooting ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Your sender and the gauge are add-ons that work together, using variable resistance ffrom the matching sender; You cannot test it by grounding the wire.

If you want to verify the reading, use a laser thermal reader such as a Raytek MiniTemp.

The stock temperature warning is a switch that is either off or on and sounds a constant warning horn by grounding the tan wire that runs from the switch to the horn. You can test that by grounding the tan wire to the engine block with the ignition turned to run.

The warning horn works fine, however if the sender and guage are a pair then I would assume that getting a standard sender from napa may be a problem. There is a Teleflex logo on the guage which ranges from 0 to 240 degrees.
