That is the lower gear case of a full-mechanical shift OMC 800 Stern Drive. Go to shop.evinrude.com click the drop down for Stern Drive and then follow the prompts for year, engine size, etc. until you get to all of the exploded diagrams for your setup. Also, you MUST buy an original manual to properly reassemble it. I do not recommend using a Clymer or Seloc manual as they cover too many year ranges and wont always include all the correct reference information and pictures needed to work on these drives.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

It would be very helpful if you posted a picture of the rest of your drive. That picture is a bit blurry. Also, if this is really an original 1987 model, It should be a Cobra.

If your drive looks like the one on the right in the following picture, It's a Cobra, AND the raw water pump is in the 'upper' under the plastic cover.

Go to BRP -- Parts Catalogs for parts breakouts when you determine the actual model number.

When you look at the lower for an 86 stringer for example, the BRP parts breakdown looks similar to the Cobra.

So, a picture of the rest of the drive helps us all determine what you really have.

Rick

It's there on shop.Evinrude.com. Parts>Stern drive>select your model from there. But don't try to assemble without a manual. You're gonna' miss a step somewhere.

What HP is the system? If it's the impeller you need it's in the bottom of the upper unit. If it's the actual circulating pump, that's up on the engine.

I think it's the stringer, it's a 87 with a 3.0 mercruiser it doesn't have the hydros like the cobra.

Can you please post a picture of what the rest of the drive looks like?
The Stringer drives were no longer used after about '85. Sounds like someone has cobbled this one together.

Not with a Mercruiser ... that's on OMC (Chevy, I think) unless somethin's really off kilter.

If the original OMC engine was a 3.0, and gave up the ghost, someone may have found a Mercruiser 3.0 to replace it.
That's why it would be nice to see pictures to see what we're dealing with.

Re: Please help identify this OMC Stern Drive!

Looks like a 400 series lower in the first pic.
13 spline propshaft = 400
15 spline propshaft = 800

Regardless, that silver paint was late 1984 to 1985, which is indeed mechanical shift stringer, and the impeller is on the bottom side of the upper unit, no impeller on the lower unit.

However, the part you need to be most concerned about is the shift cable that is missing off that lower unit. It's $750 for a new cable, and I don't see the rack/pinion assembly that the cable goes into on the lower unit either (those parts aren't available new anymore)- hope that stuff is in the boat somewhere.

It has the 13 spline lower prop shaft. Here is the motor and upper outdrive unit. 2013-02-22_20-29-41_804.jpg2013-02-22_20-30-11_741.jpg

That's a stringer all right.
Are you sure the boat's an '87?
(The HIN number on the stern would be able to tell you)

It's possible that the builder had some older drives left over that they put in a couple year newer boat.
It's also possible that previous owner subtracted a couple years off the age of the boat either by accident, or not...

The number on the outdrive upper is 983486. I have a box of parts here that came with it and it looks like I am missing some important pieces. Like the cylinder that comes up from the lower unit, and the water pump shaft. I searched the boat but it was nowhere to be found.

By HIN number I mean the number thats stamped on the boat hull. Usually on the top right corner.

Is there anywhere to get cheap parts for this? I looked up the impeller shaft and it cost nearly the price i paid for the boat.

Re: Please help identify this OMC Stern Drive!

does anyone know what motor this is?
2.5 or 3.0L Chevrolet GM Marine engine.
If it has a pulley only on the front of the crankshaft, it's the 2.5 @ 120HP
If it has a harmonic balancer on the front of the crank, it's the 3.0 @ 140HP
