Please Help! Johnson 80 HP Super Sea-horse

Ok so a couple things I need help with,
I just got this 1967 Larson with the motor for 100 dollars from a co-worker that didnt want to mess with it. Problem is the motor turns but will not start. He bought it about 6 months ago and said it ran when he purchased it but never did anything with it. The motor backfired twice and wont start. I just found this wire broken on this block - image below - ( dont know what it is ). Is this a ground? Would it prevent the motor from starting? Also I want to get a manual for this motor but this is the only identification marking I can find on the motor - image below - so I dont know what model this engine is to lookup parts or the proper manual. So with that in mind im not sure what is the proper gas/oil mixture for the motor, 2 stroke / 4 stroke etc.. Im using the gas thats in the tank already but it could be bad gas and im not sure. Im attaching images of the motor for identification. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

From what I have found around the internet looking for hours it looks like it might be one of these 2 models
V4A-19 80 1967
V4S-19 80 1967
Does anyone possibly know the difference between the two models so I can be sure to get the right parts that will be needed.

It looks to be a battery/points ign system. I do not know what those electronic modules with teh broken wires were, likely the charging system rectifiers, since I don't see a generator.

You might clean and gap the points. Most J/E points should be set to .020", at the top of the lobe. Expect to find two sets of points and one condenser. Test the ign coil. it should be a near short across the primary winding and a hundred ohms or so, from primary to secondary winding(coil tower).

After you get spark, you might clean up the carbs. You will need a manual. Hopefully, one of the knowledgeable J/E folks will chime in. You could PM Joe Reeves. He will know all the answers.

First thank you for the reply,

I took it off the little box and googled the part number on the back of the little box, it turned out to be a voltage regulator, it looks like someone tried to half *** repair it once before and it just fell apart.

Do you know if I need this hooked up to finish testing the motor for spark/compression testing? I dont want to burn anything up. If its just for charging im not to worried about it since I can toss the battery back on the charger in the house.

Also as for the points I keep seeing 0.20 gap also and a 0.30 on the spark plugs. So Im hoping this is correct, im going to hit up the local boat shop to see if they have a repair manual I can purchase in a little bit.

If I dont get more information, I might just PM Joe. But I would rather keep it in the forum in case anyone else has a similar issue.

Check the mounting plate to see if the model and seriel #s are still there. They may be painted over.

Only number I can find is the J2837019 on the silver nickel sized part im assuming this is the serial number. I have searched all over for the ID plate that is supposed to be on the mount and removed paint to find the model number with no luck. Could it possibly be on the inner side of the mount that is against the boat? I would hate to have to pull the motor off the boat to find the model number.

I did many searches on the internet and found videos on youtube. It looks like its a 1967 model by the videos but none mention the model number.

Also answered my own question about the voltage regulator. DO NOT run it with out it hooked up or you can burn up other parts and overcharge the battery.

The model # is next to the Seriel # so don't go taking the motor off.

If you are sure it's a 67, which I tend to think so because it looks just like my 66 80HP Super Sea-Horse (Except for the green paint), then you need to check out this website to confirm:

I have another question to add to this post, I had to redo the shift linkage as someone who had the motor before put it on completly wrong, which explains why the guy I bought it from said it wouldnt engage to fwd/reverse. My question is with the nuteral position. Is it normal for the motor to only go into the nuteral position after going to reverse? It will not got to nuteral after going into the fwd position then returning to nuteral..

Ok so I have a dilema, I set the points (dual points) and was doing the spark test, at first only 1,3 would spark re-adjusted the points and then 1,2,3 spark but not 4.. moved the points a little and 4 sparked but not 1,2,3. re-adjusted it again and got 1,2,3 but not 4 again.... any ideas as to why it will spark alone but not when the rest are set correct? I may be setting these wrong but im not sure. Im following this book I have.

Also did a compression test with the engine cold since it will not start, 4,3,1 are 90psi and 2 is at 70psi. Did the test twice to be sure. My understanding is that the compression should be at least about 100 could this be because its cold? Does this mean all the piston rings could be worn or that just possibly a burnt valve on 2?
