Something broke and a piece of it was caught by the piston, might be part of a ring. Might be an illusion but does the gap between piston and cylinder look a bit larger below the damage?

No, only if it was cracked inside. A crack on the bottom would just put water in the boat

Look close at the gaskets and see if any where leaking. Also look at plugs, any that are more of a white color they have been steam cleaned

I checked the block for cracks and couldn't find any above the waterline in the block. another question. I believe it was a little overfilled with oil when it started. is it possible a gasket is leaking but not in an obvious to see way?

A leaking head gasket will put water in the oil. Water gets into cylinders and then leaks down past rings

Can also do it from intake gasket easy enough

Just that visible damage suggests that the engine needs to come out and get bored and rebuilt

the visiable damage is just as smooth as the cylinder. there is not indentation in it. does this change anything? I am planning on sealing it back up with new gaskets and running engine restorer in the oil.

that looks like a crack in the bore.... time to do a die penetrate test.
