if this get to be a little wordy or confusing feel free to speak up and i will try to clearify

i have a 1988 sunchaser deck boat. the hull is set up like a tri hull but wide like a pontoon. she has a 140 hp i/o with alpha 1 and this is my first boat. i ahve already done a complete rebuild on the motor as the previous owner let it sit and block froze and busted have gone through the out drive and done impeller and gimble bearing. enough on the boat now onto the trailer. a buddie of maine came over and told me that it was a "break a way" so it would tilt but i think some one welded it up. the center of it is all round like pipe. it has keel rollers down the middle 2/3 of it and there are bunks to support the rear. if i need to get pics please let me know and i will try, not at the house but the better half is and she could e mail them to me

i have tried to launch her twice last year (just finished doing rebuild last weekend) and had major issues. first it got hund up on the bow eye/bow roller (yes roller on top:facepalm:) i have the fixed now had to flip the bow stop and winch bracket over so all that works fine. the second time it acted as if the hull was cought on the trailer and this is where i get confused at here......the keel rollers go about 2/3 of the way up then there is a wooden piece covered in carpet like the bunks and it seems like every time i go to launch it gets hung on that

1 should i remove that piece of carpet and replace with a roller? what size and what about brakets?
2 what about adding a roller further up closer to the bow to help it pop the bow up when retreaving?
3 safty chain. it dont have one. what about using a strap instrad of chain? what size of either do i need?
4 side bunks. i am going to make my own and i figured that they should sit just below the rub rail when boat is flat on trailer but how long should they be? boat is 17 ft

that should be a good start and many thanks in advance for all the help

Adding another roller is always an option! Not following the carpeted bunk as to how it's positioned or functions.

Look here in the iboats store for rollers and brackets. Should give you an idea of what's available and how to mount them.

looking at these pics the blue colored "pad opr bunk" there under the bow area is what i am thinking about removing and putting a roller on the back side of where it is now and a second roller up higher to the keel has somthing to sit on.....what i am trying to stopo by doing this is fighting to get the boat off the trailer. as i have stated i have only launched it twice and first time it got cought on the bow roller/stop and the bopw eye but the eye was on top of the roller i have fixed that. maybe my fixing that it salved all my problems?

some ideas on where to put the 2 rollers?
what size safty chain/strap should i put on it?
what about side bunks? how high should they go and how long?

Re: please help me set my trailer up properly

ok thanks

the bow does not have a safty chain on it at all....all that is there is a winch strap and it does (now)pull in a down angle. should i add a chain/strap that would ocnnect to the frame of the train?........how heavy sould i go with it?

i am wantingi to add side bunks to it to help out as well, i will be building my own. i figured that a traeted 2x6 should be heavy enough for the bunks but i dont have a clue on how long to make them, any help there would be greatlyu appreciated. how tall should they sit? above right on or below the rub rain? maybe some pics of other boats using side bunks would help that out the most

Re: please help me set my trailer up properly

something else i have been thinking of is......my transome straps are getting kind of old,i actucally dont know how old they are they feel dry to me and edges are stateing to frey. so my though is why couldn't a guy buy a 4 pac of the 1200-1500 lb ratchet strap, run a bolt through the metal frame of the ratchet and bolt it to the back of the frame of the trailer? then do the same thing up front but let thoes 2 straps hook to the bow eye? Then it would be a 5 point tie down, they only use 4 on auto transports

Re: please help me set my trailer up properly

I got a set of these at tractor supply http://www.tractorsupply.com/traile...kson-retractable-ratchet-2-in-x-6-ft--3011393 they are essentially the same thing as those expensive "boat buckles". There is a nice large mounting hole on the ratcheting mechanism you can bolt to the trailer just like you would the boat buckles and you can just cut off that lower hook and strap. They're a real time saver at the ramp.

Re: please help me set my trailer up properly

As far as your launch and load problem, it sounds like you are backing the trailer into the water too far.
The stern of the boat floats up, causing the bow to go down, getting caught on the front of the trailer.

Re: please help me set my trailer up properly

thanks so much and that is what i was begging to think

i was off in my descriptiom of the picture what i have labled as the first roller is actucally some sort of carpted covered cradle (made of wood) and that is what i think i was getting cought on. ........haw far in the water should i go with it??
