I have just acquired a 1974 1900 sst toronado, Tri-sonic progressive cup lift hull/ by roy rogers. boat is in pretty good shape for the age of it. The motor has been taken out for maintenance(new stainless steel water plugs, rebuilt carb and alternator, and new gaskets) and I will either have someone install or will do it myself with the help of a more experienced hand. I did notice 2 small holes(smaller than a dime)that i plan on repairing that are in the hull. just needing some insight on what this boat may be worth before i dump a bunch of $$$ in it. I have not been able to find ANY info on this boat anything will help.

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

Who is the MFG of the Motor? I'm NOT an I/O guy but by the looks of it it I'd say it's and OMC and if so then I'd say it's not gunna be be worth it. They went out of business in 02' and parts are NOT easy to come buy and they are not that great of motors according to some of the guys here on the forum. You might want to consider PASSING on this one. But again, I am NOT a I/O GURU!!!:p

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

it is a jet drive with a v8 ford motor. One of the reasons i went ahead and got it was because it has a truck motor in it. I thought it might be easier to maintain, trouble shoot etc...??

Drive asside, and jets can be real cool to have. You need to check the transom and stringers for rot and see what amount of repair or replacement is needed on the hull itself.

With the engine out it is a good time to check the transom and motor mounts for rot.

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

here are a couple pics of the engine comp. and transom from the outside. I see no cracks seem very sound. It doesn't have engine mounts but they might be with the motor.(still haven't towed that to the house yet). any info will help. Just learning kinda trial and error.

No, I'm not positive of anything, just going off of what the previous owner said, and the couple of pics I have. Once I get the motor over to my place I'll find out for sure.

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

Never saw a Ford motor with the distributor in the rear of the block......

And by the looks of the bilge area I would say you may be doing a deck and stringers..... I would drill some holes in the stringers and look at the wood chips to see if they are rotten.....

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

as far ans the motor is concerned....i dont think it is a chevy either as the oil filter is inthe wrong place. It could be a buick or an olds of the vintage 70's....i am by no means an expert on thoes

Looks like an Oldsmobile 350. But as for the transom and stringers, drill the holes and check the shavings. See if you can rotate the pump on the jet drive. See if the bearings are froze up. You may need to have the pump rebuilt. Could be a nice looking maybe rare boat. You don't see to many tri hull jet boats around. That pump looks like a Berkley 12JE pump. Common pump, parts are readily available.

Well.....Like I said. I AM NOT an I/O guy, and Like I ALWAYS SAY, I AM Just a DUMB OKIE!!!!!:facepalm:

LOL, you maybe an OKIE but far from Dumb.....besides I maybe starting a new project and will need your help.

For this boat, ya I would agree with the checking of all the hidden issues that may arise that you can't see. Although I have never seen a tri-hull with a jet myself, but again there is a lot I have not seen....lol.

As for the motor I think also it is an Oldsmobile engine.

WOW! Thanks for all the great info so far. I know now to check for rot in the stringers and transom. Where is the best place to drill those holes? sorry if these are dumb questions but i'm just winging it here. Also thanks for ith info on the berkley pump, I was kind of worried about that.

I agree with WILSONS88. Looks like an Oldsmobile Rocket 350, but could be as big as a 455. Which explains the weird sort of homemade-looking exhaust manifolds, as I don't think any boat builders used Olds motors. Depending on the year car it came out of that puppy could pack some serious HP!

Re: PLEASE HELP! New to the boating world

After further inspection and research on the internet.. I think the motor is an oldsmobile too.. hopefully a good one. still just going off of pics. Motor will soon be in my possession though.
