Please help !!!!!! No Power

Ok, here is the skinny. I have a 1983 60HP 2 Cyl evinrude(long shaft). I changed the lower unit to a bigger lower unit from a 19?? johnson Lower Unit. They are obviously geared backwards. B/C when I move the throttle forward, it goes into reverse, and vise versa. So to leviate the problem, I installed a hot foot. But, now in reverse, both cylinders fire,and in forward, only the lower fires. I can't even get the boat on plane. Is there something in the throttle control or engine that prevents the upper cyl. from firing with the stick in the "reverse" position????? PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!! :}

Also, when i have it in forward, it will run smooth, but when i push in the key for choke, it runs rough. It is acutally running better in rev. But, it sat up for 2 1/2 years. And, I cleaned the spark plugs. But all to no avail. I also need to find a wiring diagram for it. Any help out there??? I hope so, because I am ready to GO FISHIN' in my own boat. This is my first!!!! PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!

Howdy, LNLBean.<br /><br />Hmmmm. Sounds like you have a mismatch of controls and gearcase.<br /><br />What is a "hotfoot"?<br /><br />How did you determine that you are running on 2 in reverse and 1 in forward?<br /><br />Sounds to me like your engine is limiting the throttle opening because it thinks you are in reverse.<br /><br />We need more info. Let us know.

Lets start at the begining. <br /><br />1) The lower unit swap was OK except you need to use the shift linkage (on the powerhead) from the motor the lower came from. Your controls will then work fine although I see nothing wrong with a Hotfoot if it's comfortable for you. Just dont have your foot in the gas when you shift!<br /><br />2) Clean the carbs since it sat for so long. You already installed a new complete water pump kit when you installed the new lower -- right?<br /><br />Let us know how you make out!

JB,<br /> A hot foot is like a gas pedal in a car, works independantly of the shifter.
